Description

Sonazzos - Gostolai

Sonazzos by Gostolai is an authentic and profound expression of the Oliena terroir, in the heart of Barbagia. This wine is the result of a winemaking philosophy in which respect for tradition and local culture represents the cornerstone of the winery's work. Founded in 1988 by Giovanni Antonio Arcadu, the winery has succeeded in enhancing the unique microclimate of this area of Sardinia, where the vineyards benefit from significant diurnal temperature variations and soils capable of giving the grapes a distinctive character. The name itself recalls the bells worn by livestock in traditional Sardinian pastoral culture, evoking the inseparable bond between the wine and the island's ancestral soul. This wine is not simply a product of the land, but a tribute to the history of a people who have carefully preserved their agricultural knowledge and age-old traditions.

The production process combines traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques, with the aim of enhancing the distinctive character of the grape variety without altering its essence. The grapes are carefully harvested and undergo approximately eight days of maceration, an ideal period for gently extracting the finest colour compounds and tannins. The development of Sonazzos is a carefully managed process: the wine matures for one year in previously used barriques, allowing gradual micro-oxygenation without the wood overpowering the primary fruit character, before completing its ageing with a further four months in the bottle. This meticulous cellar management ensures that every stage, from fermentation to final maturation, contributes to the quality of the wine, giving it a solid structure and excellent ageing potential.

In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby-red colour developing towards elegant garnet hues. Its aromatic profile is intense and complex, with elegant vanilla notes combined with aromas of ripe red fruit, cherry and a spicy, mineral character reminiscent of its native terroir and the Mediterranean maquis. On the palate, Sonazzos confirms the sensations perceived on the nose, offering a structured and persistent finish. Its 14.5% Vol. alcohol content enhances its richness and power while preserving a harmonious drinking experience. The tannic structure is smooth and well integrated with the alcohol, resulting in a balanced palate. The wine's aromatic clarity and consistency between nose and palate make it an excellent choice for those seeking a characterful wine capable of expressing the essence of Sardinia through a rich, enveloping and authentic tasting experience, reflecting the unmistakable character of its terroir.

At the table, this red wine pairs beautifully with rich dishes from traditional Sardinian and international cuisine. It is an ideal match for pasta with meat-based sauces, medium-aged cheeses such as Sardinian pecorino, and grilled red meats, typical of traditional banquets in the Nuoro area. It also offers a surprising pairing with grilled oily fish, where the wine's structure complements the texture of the dish without overpowering its natural flavours. The ideal serving temperature is 16–18 °C, preferably in large wine glasses to allow the bouquet to open fully and reveal its complexity. Choosing Sonazzos Gostolai means enjoying a fine expression of Sardinian winemaking while supporting the preservation and enhancement of the viticultural heritage of one of the most fascinating areas of Central Sardinia, and celebrating the Arcadu family's continued commitment to quality and local identity.
